Scan N Cut Techniques Class

Do you feel intimated by your Scan N Cut?  You will soon become confident in your ability to use it and be ready to experience all it has to offer….cutting fabric, creating stencils, glass etching, and more. And let’s not forget the world of vinyl - heat transfer vinyl (T shirts, garden flags, tote bags, pillows), removal vinyl (wall decorations), permanent vinyl (car window decals, signs, ornaments….) And did I mention bling?  Rhinestones!!!

For 2026, our class series will be offered at 10:30 am on the 4th Thursday of each month.  All SNC models will be welcomed but some techniques may be geared more toward the DX models.

2026:

January 
Create a simple pattern to make a dust cover for your machine.  Scan in your pattern then cut your fabric pieces with your Scan N Cut.  Construction  of the dust cover will be completed at home so no need to bring a sewing machine to class.                                                

Supplies:   
Paper, pencil for designing pattern,
¾ yard fabric,
Scan N Cut with all accessories, including Fabric Mat with Rotary Blade or Fabric Blade. 
If using the Fabric Blade (vs. Rotary Blade) fabric will need to be treated with Heat and Bond Lite or Terial Magic to stabilize the fabric for the best cut.                  

February - This class will be offerred both in person and virtually.
Introduction to Canvas Workspace:  free software that complements any model of the Brother Scan N Cut.  With Canvas Workspace create new designs or edit original files.  Transfer designs to your SNC using a USB flash drive or wirelessly to your WIFI capable Scan N Cut.

Supplies: 
Laptop computer with up to date DOWNLOAD version of Canvas Workspace.  Using the download version does not require internet access once it is downloaded.  For class purposes we will not be using the ONLINE version.  Canvas Workspace software can be found at https://support.brother.com

IMPORTANT!!!  CANVAS WORKSPACE (download version) MUST BE INSTALLED ON YOUR LAPTOP/COMPUTER PRIOR TO COMING TO CLASS.

March
Create personalized projects using adhesive vinyl, heat transfer vinyl (HTV) and Embellish Heat Transfer Foil with your Scan N Cut.

Supplies:   
Scan N Cut with all accessories included
Adhesive vinyl
transfer tape
heat transfer vinyl (HTV)
Embellish Heat Transfer Foil
Item(s) to apply vinyl / foil to

Adhesive vinyl can be applied to any type of blank – plastic, glass, etc. For HTV and Embellish Heat Transfer Foil a flat item that can withstand a heat press application – tote bag, sweatshirt, t shirt, towel, etc. 

Students will choose their own design from the built in designs in the Scan N Cut.

April
Design stickers using the Image Tracing feature in Canvas Workspace.  Transfer your design to SNC using a USB stick, create an offset and use the half cut feature in the Scan N Cut to cut the stickers out.

Supplies:   
Scan N Cut with all accessories included. 
Laptop with Canvas Workspace (download version).
Sticker paper 
basic clipart or stamped images to be used with image tracing. 
A USB stick to transfer your sticker designs from Canvas Workspace to your SNC 
low tack mat 
standard blade.

May
Glass Etching.  Create a stencil using your SNC, apply etching cream and, after required time,  reveal your finished design.

Supplies:  
SNC machine and all accessories
Adhesive vinyl to create stencil
transfer tape  
Etch All or Armour Etch cream
Protective gloves
popsicle stick for application of etching cream
Blank glass object to etch  

June
Import a .pes format embroidery applique file into Canvas Workspace, extract the applique cutting lines from the embroidery design and convert it to a  .fcm format cutting file for the Scan N Cut.  This process enables you to take intricate embroidery designs and repurpose them for precise fabric cutting, ensuring that your applique pieces are perfectly shaped and fit seamlessly into your final project.

Supplies:  
SNC machine and all accessories. 
Laptop with download version of Canvas Workspace. 
Access to a “. pes” embroidery applique file that will be used to create the cut files. A basic applique file is suggested for learning the process.  USB stick to transfer your file from Canvas Workspace to SNC.

July
Wood Burning project using the SNC.  Create a stencil, fill in design with a “scorch pen” or wood burning paste and finish off by using a heat gun to create the wood burning effect. 

Supplies:  
SNC machine and all accessories. 
Adhesive vinyl to create stencil,
transfer tape. 
Scorch Pen or Wood Burning Paste and required protective gloves and application tool.  
Unfinished wood blank.  

August
Fussy cutting fabric using the Cut Data function in Scan N Cut.  How to prepare and “fussy” cut fabric.

Supplies:  
SNC machine and all accessories. 
Fabric with basic designs for practice.
Fabric mat and Rotary Blade or Fabric Blade.   If using Fabric Blade the fabric will need to be prepared for cutting using Heat and Bond Lite or Terial Magic. 

September
Create a personalized Coir Doormat using a stencil created with Scan N Cut.

Supplies:  
SNC machine and all accessories. 
Coir Doormat,
freezer paper or adhesive vinyl and transfer paper for creating a stencil. 
Painters tape and
straight pins to secure stencil to doormat. 
Outdoor paint and
large stencil brush to apply paint. 
Design options will be discussed in class.  For a large design a 12x24 inch standard mat is recommended.   For smaller designs a 12x12 inch standard mat.

October - This class is FREE if you have purchased borh your SNC and compatible machine from Sew What
Demonstration only class.  Brother “My Connection”.  Pair your wireless compatible Brother sewing and embroidery machine with your SDX325 or SDX330D Scan N Cut.  Send patterns between your machines to create embroidery or cut applique shapes directly.  Brother Luminaire and My Design Center will be used for demonstration purposes.
